THE RED BULL LAUNCHPAD – YOUR TURN TO RIP

Do you feel like making SUP history? Help us help you.

The crew over at Red Bull is known for helping their team riders do things bigger, bolder and better. Well heads up: now they want to get you involved.

They’re mission is to bring your big idea to life with their new Launchpad contest. The premise is pretty simple: jump in front of a camera and give your quick pitch for something unique you’d like to see happen. Obviously, the bigger and bolder the better, but it should be something that’s obtainable. When you’re done, simply upload your pitch on the Red Bull Launchpad site.

So we can’t do this without throwing our hat in the arena. Who’s SUP mag endorsing? Last year, Karen Wrenn and her team pitched the idea of surfing the longest wave in the world using a submarine, riding from Cortez Bank to Dana Point Harbor. Check out the peeler coming off that sub (below). The Channel Island’s pioneer would make history with the help of our nation’s finest.

I was super STOKED to have the opportunity to work with futures fins! I wanted a fin that would be great for distance, course racing, work when riding waves at Battle of the Paddle and especially one that would be fast downwind! A true all round fin.

Race The Sun

On the last day of paddling between all eight of the Channel Islands I ended up having to race the sun completing the last crossing after paddling for 11 hours and 22 minutes sunrise to sunset. The short video inspires me to go out and challenge myself. The new fin by futures fins was designed to move fast through the water. Thanks to Transporter, Chris Hotz, Ryan Moss, Shelly Strazis, Chris Wyman and the guys at Futures for believing in me.

Whether you are new to the sport or advanced paddler looking to accelerate your paddling skillis ROUND THE ROCK will feature two of the planets best SUP instructors Chuck Patterson & Karen Wrenn as part of event agenda. Get your spot reserved today as they are bound to fill up fast!

The beginner clinic is everything you need to know to get to a level of enjoyment in paddling. The advanced clinic takes you to the next phase of racing and the competitive side of SUP. We talk about equipment and finding the right gear, different paddling techniques, the whole mindset of racing, what to train for and then we talk about nutrition and hydration. We try to cater to all the types of racing: short distance, sprint racing, long distance and channel crossings so that people get a sense that there’s all sorts of different things you can do. Then we get out on the water and learn buoy turns, race starts, drafting techniques, overtaking competitors, and lots more.

Paddle With Pros was on the Willamette river teaching 15 people how to Stand Up Paddle this last Saturday. It was a beautiful day with Steve Gates from Big Winds showing up to enjoy the morning out on the river with MAC members. There have been lots of great emails from participants with one of the new paddler writing us, ” I am hooked and looking forward to paddling more this summer!” and another paddler saying, “Outstanding introduction to the sport of SUP!” We worked on basics and spent two and half hours out on the river practicing what was learned. I was really happy to see how fast everyone picked it up. The best part for me is to introduce new people to the sport and see the smiles on their faces.

MAC CLINIC

The MAC is the largest athletic club in the world with over 20,000 members. The Outdoor Athletic Club at the MAC allows members to take the time spent working out in the gym and enjoy the outdoors. Having one of the premier athletic clubs in the world recognize SUP as a sport is awesome and it’s fun to see it grow in the Northwest!

Gorge Paddle Challenge Interview

The Columbia River is an amazing place to standup paddle. The scenery is unreal with views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. You can have days that are perfectly flat but most commonly you have wind and swells. The Gorge is amazing for downwinders. Once you figure out how much fun a true downwinder is… you will be hooked forever.
